Winter Tires in Germany: Rules, Marking, and Fines

Winter Tires in Germany: Rules, Marking, and Fines

3 quick steps

In Germany, there is no fixed date when all drivers must change from summer tires to winter tires. The rule in force is situative Winterreifenpflicht: if there is black ice, slush, snow, frost, or icy crust on the road, the car must be fitted with suitable winter or all-season tires. In 2026, for such trips it is not the M+S label by itself that matters, but the Alpine symbol, the mountain-and-snowflake pictogram.

When winter tires are mandatory

The rule is laid down in § 2 Abs. 3a StVO. It is tied not to the calendar, but to the condition of the road. You may not drive on summer tires if there is:

  • black ice;
  • slippery snow;
  • slush;
  • an icy or frosty surface.

The popular O to O rule, from October to Easter, remains a convenient guideline, but it does not replace the law. On a dry and warm day in January, the police do not require winter tires just because of the month on the calendar. But in winter conditions, the requirement also applies to vehicles registered outside Germany.

What marking is required

For winter conditions, tires with the Alpine symbol are suitable: a three-peaked mountain with a snowflake inside. Since October 1, 2024, the M+S, M&S, or M.S. marking alone is no longer enough to comply with the German winter tire requirement.

The M+S marking means Matsch und Schnee, mud and snow. It used to be used widely, but manufacturers could place it on tires without a single strict test of winter performance. That is why, for a current check, you should look specifically for the Alpine symbol. If an old set has only M+S, it is better to treat it as unsuitable for winter roads in Germany.

The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6 mm. For winter use, this is the lower legal limit, not a good practical benchmark: German car clubs usually advise replacing winter tires earlier, often when around 4 mm remains.

Fines for driving on summer tires in winter

If a driver sets out in winter road conditions on unsuitable tires, fines and a point in Flensburg apply. As of 2026, the common scale looks like this:

Violation Fine Points
Driving without suitable winter tires in winter conditions 60 euros 1
The same violation causing obstruction to other road users 80 euros 1
The same violation creating danger 100 euros 1
The same violation resulting in an accident 120 euros 1

Separate penalties may also apply for worn, damaged, or technically unsuitable tires. So you need to check not only the symbol on the sidewall, but also the age, condition, size, load index, and tread depth.

Insurance consequences are also possible. If an accident happens on summer tires in winter road conditions, car insurance may treat the situation as gross negligence or take the violation into account when determining liability. The specific outcome depends on the contract, the type of insurance, and the circumstances of the accident.

How to choose a set of tires

Dimensions and permitted parameters are taken from the vehicle documents and from the sidewall of the current tires. A typical marking looks like this: 175/70 R 13 82 T.

How to read this marking:

  • 175 is the tire width in millimetres;
  • 70 is the profile height as a percentage of the width;
  • R is radial construction;
  • 13 is the rim diameter in inches;
  • 82 is the load index (Reifentragfähigkeit);
  • T is the speed rating.

The load index must match the vehicle. If you are unsure, compare the vehicle documents, the CoC, the old tires, and the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Speed ratings

Rating Maximum speed, km/h
F 80
G 90
J 100
K 110
L 120
M 130
N 140
P 150
Q 160
R 170
S 180
T 190
U 200
H 210
V 240
VR >210
W 270
Y 300
ZR >240
(Y) >300

For winter tires in Germany, a speed rating lower than the vehicle’s maximum speed may be allowed if the driver permanently sees the limit and does not exceed it. In modern cars, this is often done through a speed warning setting; in older cars, a clearly visible sticker or sign is used within the driver’s field of view.

Buying and changing tires

Winter tires can be bought online, from a dealer, or through a tire service. It is more practical to decide in advance whether you need only the tires or a second complete set of wheels with rims.

Options:

  • tires without rims are cheaper to buy, but each season requires mounting and balancing;
  • complete wheels cost more at the start, but seasonal replacement is usually faster and cheaper;
  • delivery directly to the workshop is convenient if you do not want to transport the set in the car yourself.

The cost of seasonal replacement depends heavily on the region, wheel size, rim type, pressure sensors, and whether the tires need to be mounted onto rims. Old estimates such as 8 to 12 euros per wheel are better checked with a specific service: in 2026, the price may differ significantly.

How to store the second set

If the set is stored at home, choose a dry, cool, and dark place. In German apartments, a Keller is often used for this, but before storing tires it is worth checking the house rules and the available space.

Wheels with rims are conveniently stored horizontally in a stack or on a Felgenbaum rack. Tires without rims are usually kept vertically and turned from time to time so that they do not deform.

An alternative is storage at a tire service or Werkstatt. It costs more, but it removes the space problem: the service usually labels the wheels, checks their condition, inflates them if needed, and prepares the set for the next season. It is best to check Einlagerung prices in advance, because they vary by city, wheel size, and the services included.

Short checklist before winter

  • Check the Alpine symbol on all four tires.
  • Measure the tread depth and inspect the sidewalls for cracks or damage.
  • Compare the size, load index, and speed rating with the vehicle documents.
  • Book a workshop appointment before the first snowfall: in October and November, free dates fill up quickly.
  • Check the tire pressure after installation and after a noticeable drop in temperature.
  • If you are driving abroad, check the rules of the destination country: winter tire requirements differ across Europe.
