TestAS (Test für Ausländische Studierende) is a standardized exam for international applicants who plan to study in Germany. TestAS is especially often mentioned for competitive fields, including medicine. But there is no universal rule: at one university the result may be a plus, at another it may be mandatory, and at a third it may not matter at all. Why TestAS is useful

Modules in the digital TestAS
The digital TestAS offers six Fachmodule:
- Geistes-, Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften;
- Lebenswissenschaften;
- Mathematik, Informatik und Naturwissenschaften;
- Ingenieurwissenschaften;
- Wirtschaftswissenschaften;
- Medizin.
For medicine, you choose the Medizin module if the university requires or recommends that specific module. The module description includes topics from anatomy, physiology, biology, biochemistry, psychology, sociology, and physics, but the exam does not require you to already know all medical terms like a medical student.
Modules in the paper-based TestAS
In the paper-based format, the set of modules is different. Usually the following are available:
- Geistes-, Kultur- und Gesellschaftswissenschaften;
- Ingenieurwissenschaften;
- Mathematik, Informatik und Naturwissenschaften;
- Wirtschaftswissenschaften.
If your goal is a field that requires the Medizin or Lebenswissenschaften module, check whether the paper-based format matches the requirements of the specific university. Sometimes the correct format matters more than a convenient date.
Exam language
TestAS can be taken in German or English. The official website states that some universities may require a specific exam language, so the language needs to be checked not only against TestAS, but also against the page of your chosen program.
Choose the language in which you read tasks faster and lose less time on wording. If your degree program will be in German, that does not always mean you must take TestAS in German, but the university may set its own rule.
Registration and timing
Registration takes place through the official testas.de website. This is also where dates, test centers, country-specific rules, and preparation materials are published.
Before choosing a date, check two deadlines:
- When the university must receive your TestAS result.
- When TestAS publishes the result after the exam.
Official materials give the following guideline: paper-based TestAS results are usually ready in about 4 weeks, and digital TestAS results in about 3 weeks. That is why it is better to plan the exam with a buffer before the application deadline.
How to tell whether you need TestAS
Use this short algorithm:
- Open the program page on the university website.
- Find sections such as Zulassung, Bewerbung, Auswahlverfahren, or internationale Bewerber.
- Check whether TestAS is listed as a Pflicht, Bonus, Empfehlung, or not mentioned at all.
- Clarify the required format, Fachmodul, and language.
- Compare the exam date with the application deadline and the result publication date.
- If you are applying through uni-assist or another system, check where and how the certificate must be uploaded.
Common mistakes
- Registering for TestAS without checking whether your chosen university takes it into account.
- Choosing a module based on rumors instead of the program requirements.
- Taking the exam too late and not getting the result in time for the application deadline.
- Thinking that TestAS by itself compensates for a weak language certificate or an unsuitable school document.
- Looking only at the rules for medicine, even though the selection logic for other fields may be different.
