'N26 in Germany: how to open an online account, pass verification, and
Find your route
3 quick steps
N26 is a German mobile bank with online account opening, a German IBAN, and Mastercard Debit. In Germany, it is often seen as a fast way to get a Girokonto without a branch, especially in the first months after moving.
The main thing to understand before signing up: the free Standard plan is not a “full banking package without conditions,” but a basic digital account with a virtual card. A physical card, extra features, more cash options, and premium support depend on the plan.
N26 plans in Germany
According to N26’s official pricing page for Germany, the current personal account lineup includes Standard, Smart, Go, and Metal. Prices and package contents can change, so before applying you should check the terms in the app and on the bank’s website.
| Plan | Monthly fee | Card | Cash in euros | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | 0EUR | first virtual debit card free, physical card for an extra fee | the basic limit for free withdrawals depends on the bank’s terms | a second account, phone payments, everyday online payments |
| Smart | 4,90EUR | physical debit card included | more free withdrawals than Standard | people who want Spaces and budgeting |
| Go | 9,90EUR | physical debit card included | more withdrawals and travel benefits | frequent travel and payments abroad |
| Metal | 16,90EUR | metal card | the maximum set of limits and premium features | people who want banking and travel services in one package |
An important detail: N26 issues Mastercard Debit, not Girocard. For supermarkets, online purchases, subscriptions, and Apple Pay or Google Pay, this is usually enough. But some small shops, machines, and local services in Germany still work better with Girocard. So it is worth understanding in advance how payment methods work in Germany.
With Standard, the basic setup is a virtual card; a physical card must be ordered separately under the bank’s terms
Who N26 suits
N26 is well suited to people who are ready to live without a branch: opening an account from a smartphone, confirming operations in the app, managing limits online, and receiving documents in PDF. For new residents of Germany, the advantages remain a German IBAN, an English-language interface, and a quick start after approval.
N26 can be convenient as a main account if you rarely deal with cash and do not depend on Girocard. As a second account, it is suitable even more broadly: for trips, online shopping, a family budget, a separate account for subscriptions, or backup payments.
It is better to compare alternatives in advance if you need:
- a free physical card with no separate fee;
- frequent cash deposits;
- a full Girocard;
- phone support without a premium plan;
- a branch you can visit in person;
- outgoing SWIFT transfers as a regular need.
How to open an account
Registration takes place online: you enter your personal data, choose a plan, confirm your email, pass identification, link your smartphone, and receive an IBAN after approval. To open N26, the bank lists basic requirements: legal adulthood, residence in a supported country, a smartphone, and a valid document that the bank accepts for your country and status.
Usually you will need:
- to be at least 18 years old;
- a smartphone and a personal phone number;
- a valid passport, ID card, or another supported document;
- a residential address in Germany;
- the ability to pass identity verification in the way the app offers specifically to you.
Identification methods
N26 uses several verification scenarios. The available option depends on the country, the document, and the customer profile.
- Photo or video identification. The classic route through the app: document, face, selfie or video, and confirmations on screen.
- eID. For residents of Germany with an electronic identity card, an activated PIN, and an NFC-enabled smartphone.
- Bank Account Verification. For some customers in Germany: after a photo of the document and a selfie, you need to send a SEPA transfer from an account in your own name; N26 states a range for that transfer from 1EUR to 100EUR.
Copies and screenshots of documents do not replace the original. If the app asks for a second document, an Aufenthaltstitel card, or proof of address, it is better not to argue with the form and instead upload exactly what the bank requested.

Identification, transaction confirmations, and card setup are handled through the app
N26 for foreigners
For people moving to Germany, N26 is convenient because the account can be opened without going to a branch, and the interface and support are available in English. You can receive a salary to this IBAN, pay rent, set up Lastschrift, and make normal bank transfers.
But the lists of supported documents change. The practical rule is to check the document requirements for your own country of citizenship and current status. One customer may only need a passport, while another may be asked for an Aufenthaltstitel, a Meldebescheinigung, a rental contract, proof of income, or proof of the origin of funds.
Before routing your salary and all regular debits to N26, it is better to complete your residence registration and make sure that access to the account is fully activated.
If Standard is not approved, an automatic review is possible, including through SCHUFA. Sometimes the bank offers a different product, such as Flex. If you specifically need the legally required basic account, N26 has a separate Basiskonto procedure; its terms and form should be taken from the bank’s website and checked before submitting.

After opening the account, the main actions with the account, cards, limits, and documents are available in the app
Card, payments, and transfers
After the account is activated, you can pay with the virtual card through Apple Pay or Google Pay without waiting for the physical plastic card. The physical Mastercard Debit is useful for ATMs, older terminals, trips, and situations where the phone may not work.
Mastercard Debit is suitable for regular purchases, subscriptions, and online services. But it is not a credit card: for some hotel deposits and car rentals, you may need a separate credit card.
SEPA transfers work as with a normal bank. If the receiving bank supports instant payments, you can send SEPA Instant under the terms of your plan. MoneyBeam is available between N26 users, and before a regular transfer the bank uses a payee name and IBAN check to reduce the risk of mistakes.
Transfers in other currencies in the app are tied to Wise. For many everyday routes this is enough, but if you need outgoing SWIFT transfers, it is better to compare N26 with another bank in advance.

Transfers, IBAN checks, and transaction confirmations are done in the app
Account statements, CSV exports, and proof of account ownership can be downloaded online. This is convenient for an employer, landlord, accounting, or personal record-keeping.
Cash and CASH26
N26 does not have its own branches, so cash services work through ATMs and CASH26. The terms depend on the country of the contract and the plan. N26’s official pages for Germany use different wording about the number of free withdrawals on Standard, so before choosing a plan you should check the limit in the current Preis- und Leistungsverzeichnis and in the app.
| Operation | How it is usually arranged |
|---|---|
| ATM withdrawal in euros | the limit of free withdrawals depends on the plan; after the limit, a fixed fee may apply |
| Withdrawal in another currency | on Standard and Smart, a bank fee usually applies; on Go and Metal, it may be absent |
| CASH26: withdrawal | through partner shops with a code in the app; N26 states limits per operation and per 24 hours |
| CASH26: deposit | paid; N26 states a 1.5% fee and deposit limits |
| ATM surcharge | a separate ATM may show its own surcharge on screen, even if the bank does not charge a fee |
With CASH26, you can withdraw or deposit money at the checkout in partner shops such as REWE, dm, Penny, or Rossmann, if the service is available for your account. For cash deposits, this is more convenient than a branch, but it is not free.

Cash at N26 depends on ATMs and the CASH26 partner network, so you need to check the plan and limits in advance
Spaces, joint account, and moving your old account
Paid plans include Spaces, internal subaccounts for rent, taxes, holidays, or other purposes. In Smart, Go, and Metal, the bank lists up to ten Spaces. For a couple or family, a joint account may be useful, but its terms need to be checked separately: usually both people must first have personal N26 accounts.
If you are moving your main money flow to N26, do not close your old account right away. First, make sure that your salary, rent, insurance, internet, mobile phone, and other Lastschrift payments have really moved to the new IBAN. A mistake in one automatic debit can cost more than a month of parallel maintenance for the old account.
Account access and security
N26 is heavily tied to a smartphone. This is convenient as long as you have your phone, number, email, password, and confirmation PIN. The risk appears when the phone, SIM card, and access to email are all lost at the same time.
Practical security measures:
- do not wipe your old phone until the new one is fully linked to the account;
- change your phone number at the bank before disabling the old SIM;
- keep the confirmation PIN separate from the phone;
- enable only the card functions you really need: online payments, cash withdrawals, payments abroad, contactless;
- freeze the card immediately after it is lost;
- do not give out your password, PIN, full card details, or confirmation codes over the phone.

Fast mobile access is convenient, but account recovery depends on the phone, number, email, and confirmation codes
N26 support mainly works through chat. A phone line is not available to all plans, so people who prefer to solve banking issues at a counter or by phone should compare N26 with traditional banks.
Is N26 worth opening
N26 in Germany remains a strong option for a digital everyday account: fast onboarding, a German IBAN, a convenient app, a virtual card, SEPA transfers, and clear limit management. For new residents of the country, it is often a good starter bank.
The limitations are also significant: Standard is not the same as a full free package, the physical card and some features depend on the plan, there is no Girocard, cash is not always convenient, and support is mostly digital. If these points are critical, compare N26 with C24 and traditional banks before applying.
The best scenario is to open N26 consciously: choose the plan in advance, check the identification document, verify the cash limits, and do not move all your money until you have full access to the account.
