Cashback and Bonus Programs in Germany: How to Get Refunds on Purchases
Find your route
3 quick steps
Cashback in Germany means getting back part of a purchase price as money, points, or bonuses. For online orders, people most often use cashback portals such as Shoop or iGraal; for everyday in-store shopping, they use loyalty programmes such as Payback and DeutschlandCard.
The basic idea is simple: a retailer pays a partner a commission for bringing in a customer, and the partner shares part of that commission with the customer. However, the benefit depends on the terms of the particular offer, product category, cookies, payment method, refund period, and withdrawal rules.
Types of programmes
There are two main formats in Germany.
| Format | How it works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Cashback portal | You visit the retailer via the portal’s website or browser extension, then receive part of the amount back after the order is confirmed | Shoop, iGraal |
| Bonus programme | At the checkout or online, you provide your card or membership number and collect points | Payback, DeutschlandCard |
There are also hybrid models: bank cards with bonuses, supermarket coupon apps, travel miles, promo codes, and partner promotions. They are worth comparing separately, because “10% cashback” is not always better than a standard discount or a lower price from another seller.
How to get cashback on an online purchase
The process for an online retailer is as follows:
- Find the item and compare the final price including delivery.
- Check whether the retailer participates in a cashback portal.
- Compare the cashback rate, restrictions, and coupons across several platforms.
- Disable your ad blocker for this purchase or use a separate browser profile.
- Go to the retailer only through the cashback portal’s link.
- Do not open other coupon sites in parallel or switch devices before paying.
- Save the order confirmation and Rechnung.
- Check whether the purchase appears in your portal account.
If the purchase was not tracked, most services provide a Nachbuchungsanfrage or Nachbuchungsauftrag form. You usually need to provide the order number, date, amount, and proof of purchase.
Why cashback may not be credited
The most common reasons are:
- cookies were blocked or deleted before the order was completed;
- an ad blocker, privacy extension, or VPN disrupted tracking;
- you first visited the retailer through another coupon site;
- you used a promo code that is not permitted under the cashback portal’s rules;
- the item was returned in full or in part;
- the order was placed in the retailer’s app, although the rules required a purchase through the website;
- the product category is excluded from cashback;
- payment or delivery was arranged differently from the offer terms.
Before a large purchase, open the terms for that particular retailer on the portal. Cashback is often calculated not on the full order amount, but on the net price excluding VAT, delivery, gift cards, Pfand deposits, and additional services.
How much you can get back
Standard rates change constantly. At many retailers, cashback may be just a few percent, while boosted offers pay more but are often limited in time or to particular categories. So do not plan a purchase solely because of a large percentage in a banner.
Check three things:
- what the refund is calculated from: gross price, net price, the retailer’s commission, or a fixed amount;
- when the cashback becomes confirmed: after delivery, after the return period ends, or after the seller’s review;
- how and from what minimum amount you can withdraw money or use points.
Shoop
Shoop is one of the better-known German cashback portals. It is used for online shops, travel services, mobile and internet plans, insurance, and other partner offers.
What to check before buying through Shoop:
- the rate for the particular retailer and category;
- exclusions for Gutscheine, gift cards, marketplace sellers, and subscriptions;
- the tracking and confirmation period;
- available Auszahlung methods in your account;
- whether an increased cashback offer or Gutschein is genuinely compatible with the refund.
Do not rely on old retailer lists or average annual savings: partners, rates, and withdrawal methods change. For expensive purchases, it is better to take a screenshot of the terms on the day you order.
iGraal
iGraal is a European cashback service with a browser extension and mobile options. In Germany, it also works through partner retailers and credits cashback after a purchase is confirmed.
Useful details to check in your iGraal account:
- the minimum withdrawal threshold;
- available Auszahlung options: bank transfer, PayPal, or Gutscheine;
- processing time after cashback is confirmed;
- rules for promo codes and the browser extension;
- what happens to the balance after a long period of account inactivity.
If the service promises a sign-up bonus, treat it as part of a promotion rather than a guaranteed ongoing benefit: such bonuses change more often than the basic cashback principle.
Payback
Payback is a major German bonus programme for offline and online purchases. Points are credited by showing a card, scanning the app, or providing a membership number online at partner retailers.
The usual rule is: 1 Payback Punkt = 1 euro cent. From 200 points, various redemption options are available: payment at partner retailers, Prämien, Gutscheine, donations, transfer to Miles & More, or Auszahlung to a Girokonto if the function is available in your account.
Payback also offers credit cards through partners, including American Express products. These cards should be assessed separately: look at the annual fee, point-earning terms, transaction exclusions, Schufa check, and your own discipline with credit spending.
DeutschlandCard
DeutschlandCard is similar to Payback: members collect Punkte with partners and then use them for rewards, payment at certain partners, or donations. A typical value is 100 DeutschlandCard Punkte = 1 euro, but the specific Einlösung options depend on the partners and programme rules.
In 2026, it is important to consider DeutschlandCard’s announcement: the company stated that it will gradually wind down operations by 30 November 2026. According to the programme, points already collected will remain available and can be used under the applicable rules. New users should therefore check the current status of partners and point-use deadlines especially carefully.
How to choose a service for a purchase
The best service is usually chosen not “once and for all,” but for each particular purchase. A practical order is:
- First, find the lowest final price for the item, including delivery and returns.
- Then check cashback portals and bonus programmes.
- Compare not only the percentage, but also the confirmation period, tracking reliability, and withdrawal method.
- Take promo codes into account: sometimes a promo code without cashback is better than cashback without a promo code.
- For regular purchases, keep two or three main accounts, but do not spread yourself across dozens of services.
If the difference between options is small, choose the service where it is easier to receive the money, not the one with the higher advertised percentage.
What to consider regarding data and finances
Cashback is not free in terms of privacy. Services see some of your shopping activity and link it to your profile. Before registering, check:
- what data is collected;
- whether you can delete the account and what happens to the balance;
- how consent for cookies and marketing emails works;
- whether points expire;
- whether you can withdraw the remaining balance when closing the account;
- who operates the programme and in which country it is based.
Do not buy an item just for cashback. A 2–5% refund does not compensate for an inflated price, an unnecessary subscription, expensive delivery, or a difficult return.
Checklist before payment
- The seller’s price is genuinely the best after delivery.
- Cashback is calculated for the appropriate product category.
- The promo code is allowed under the portal’s rules.
- Cookies and tracking are not blocked.
- The order is placed in the same window that the portal opened.
- You understand the confirmation and withdrawal timeline.
- The amount is not too small for the minimum Auszahlung threshold.
- You have saved the Rechnung and Bestellbestätigung.
FAQ
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Does cashback reduce the price of an item immediately? | Usually not. You first pay the full price, and the refund appears later in your service account. |
| Can cashback and a promo code be combined? | Sometimes, but only if the promo code is permitted by the terms for that particular retailer on the portal. |
| Why is a purchase pending? | The retailer is waiting for the return period to end and then confirms or rejects the commission. |
| Which is better: Payback or a cashback portal? | Payback/a loyalty card is more convenient for supermarkets and everyday shopping; for online orders, comparing cashback portals is often more worthwhile. |
| Is it worth installing a browser extension? | It helps you remember cashback, but requires access to browser data. Check its permissions and privacy settings. |
