'Can You Change Your Residence Permit From a Chancenkarte to Another
Find your route
3 quick steps
The Chancenkarte, or Opportunity Card, allows you to come to Germany to look for qualified employment or take steps to have your qualifications recognised. If you do not find a job, there is no automatic extension for years to come. However, changing to another Aufenthaltstitel in Germany may be possible if you meet the requirements for the new legal basis and apply in time.
What is the Chancenkarte?
The Chancenkarte is governed by Section 20a of the Aufenthaltsgesetz. It is an Aufenthaltserlaubnis for looking for work or for measures connected with the recognition of foreign qualifications.
The first Opportunity Card is issued as a Such-Chancenkarte for a maximum of 12 months. During this stay, you may work on a limited basis: up to 20 hours per week, and you may also undertake trial employment with an employer for up to two weeks, provided the legal requirements are met.
The main idea behind the document is to give a qualified applicant the opportunity to stay in Germany and look for suitable work without having a signed employment contract when entering the country.
What happens if you do not find a job?
If you have not found suitable work or received a verbindliches Arbeitsplatzangebot during the validity of the Chancenkarte, you should not expect an ordinary extension for another job-search period. The law limits the Such-Chancenkarte to a term of up to 12 months.
Another Such-Chancenkarte is possible only after a break: after the previous Such-Chancenkarte ends, the person must spend at least as much time outside Germany or in Germany on another lawful basis as they previously spent on the Such-Chancenkarte.
Therefore, as the end of the validity period approaches, you should assess the options in advance:
- switching to an Aufenthaltserlaubnis for employment if you have found a suitable employment contract;
- a Folge-Chancenkarte if you have a qualified job offer but do not meet the conditions for another work-related residence permit;
- switching to a residence permit for study, Ausbildung, recognition of qualifications, or another basis if the requirements are met;
- family reunification if the relevant family circumstances exist and the requirements are met;
- leaving Germany if there is no new lawful basis.
What is a Folge-Chancenkarte?
A Folge-Chancenkarte is not simply an extension of the job search. Under Section 20a AufenthG, it may be granted for up to two years if, while staying on a Such-Chancenkarte, the person has an employment contract or a binding offer of qualified employment in Germany and the Bundesagentur für Arbeit has given its approval where required.
An important detail: the Folge-Chancenkarte applies when a person does not meet the requirements for another suitable work-related residence permit under Chapter 4 AufenthG. If the conditions for a standard work-related Aufenthaltstitel are met, it makes more sense to apply for that permit.
Can you change your legal basis for study or family?
The possibility of changing does not depend simply on the desire to stay, but on the new legal basis. The Ausländerbehörde checks whether you meet the requirements for the specific Aufenthaltstitel: the purpose of stay, documents, financing, insurance, accommodation, deadlines, and sometimes previous immigration history.
Study or Ausbildung
Switching to a residence permit for study or Ausbildung may be possible if you have university admission, an Ausbildung contract, or another confirmed basis, and if you meet the financing and health-insurance requirements. The fact that you previously held a Chancenkarte is not sufficient on its own.
Work
If you have found an employer, you need to check which work-related residence permit is appropriate: for example, an Aufenthaltserlaubnis for qualified employment, an EU Blue Card, or another option. The conditions depend on your qualifications, salary, profession, recognition of your diploma, and the nature of the work.
Family reunification
Switching to an Aufenthaltserlaubnis on family grounds may be possible if you have a spouse, registered partner, child, or another basis for Familiennachzug and meet the legal requirements. Documents proving the relationship, accommodation, income, insurance, and the status of the receiving family member are particularly important here.
Why you should not rely on verbal promises
The Ausländerbehörde makes the decision, and in some cases other authorities are involved. Practice can vary by federal state and city, but this does not mean the issue can be reliably solved simply by moving to another region. Moving by itself does not create a right to a new residence permit and may complicate deadlines if a case has already been opened at one authority.
It is better to act in writing:
- request a list of documents from your Ausländerbehörde;
- submit the application before your current Aufenthaltstitel expires;
- keep proof of submission;
- separately clarify whether Fiktionswirkung under Section 81 AufenthG applies in your situation;
- do not start work or studies if your current status does not permit them.
Practical steps
- Check the validity period of your Chancenkarte and do not wait until the final weeks.
- Identify the new legal basis: work, Folge-Chancenkarte, study, Ausbildung, recognition of qualifications, family, or another route.
- Compare the requirements on the official website of your city’s Ausländerbehörde and on federal information portals.
- Prepare evidence: contract, Zulassung, Finanzierungsnachweis, Krankenversicherung, Mietvertrag, diplomas, recognition of qualifications, Anabin or ZAB, where applicable.
- Submit the application before your current status expires and keep the Eingangsnachweis.
- If the situation is complex, obtain individual advice before applying, not after a refusal.
Common mistakes
- assuming that the Chancenkarte is automatically extended for two years without a job offer;
- confusing a Folge-Chancenkarte with another year of job searching;
- submitting documents after the card’s validity expires;
- changing the purpose of stay without evidence of the new legal basis;
- starting work beyond the permitted scope;
- assuming that another Ausländerbehörde must make a more lenient decision;
- relying on outdated visa requirements instead of the rules in force after the Fachkräfteeinwanderung reform.
Brief conclusion
Changing your residence permit after a Chancenkarte is possible not as a universal concession, but as a new application for a specific Aufenthaltstitel. If you have found work, check the work-related residence permit options or the Folge-Chancenkarte. If you have not found work, assess study, Ausbildung, family grounds, or another lawful route in advance. The key conditions in 2026 remain the same: apply in time, document the new legal basis, and stay within the permissions of your current Chancenkarte.
